THE CHALLENGES WE FACE

Every day, Australian children and families face severe challenges from poverty, homelessness, violence and neglect. 

Child Poverty – 761,000 or 1 in 6 children live in poverty.  

Child homelessness – 17,646 children under 12 are homeless.  

Domestic family violence – 1 in 4 children are exposed.  

Child abuse and neglect.  Over 1,400 are exposed to violence every day.

OUR IMPACT

With the support of champions like you, we’ve been able to change the game for so many

 Australian children, young people and their families. Here’s what we achieved in 2022-23: 

 14,083 children, young people and families were assisted by Barnardos. 

 7,634 were supported by our Safety and Prevention programs. 

 5,452 were helped through referrals and information. 

 1,530 young people were assisted by our youth programs. 

 674 children, young people and families benefitted from supported housing. 

 809 were assisted through early learning and education. 

 661 children and families were supported by our parenting programs.  

What we do

Since 1921, Barnardos has supported Australia’s children and families in powerful and effective ways: 

  • Advocacy – We advocate for all Australian kids by working with the government and policy-makers to improve laws, policies and practices. We raise awareness of the challenging issues affecting vulnerable kids. Whether it’s domestic violence, the rising cost of living, safe housing or complex needs, we ensure everyone understands the impact these issues have on children.  

 

  • Family support – We help families with complex issues such as domestic family violence, poverty and homelessness through wrap-around services and specialist Aboriginal programs. 

 

  • Youth support – We provide youth homelessness services, counselling and mediation, mentoring and advocacy, youth drop in and street outreach programs as well as drug and alcohol services. 
  • Parenting support  – We give parents the tools and confidence to care for their children,  encouraging them to be their child’s first teacher, strengthening the parent/child relationship and their connection to community. 

  

  • Early learning and education support – We focus on early learning, school readiness and engagement.  We provide breakfast clubs and homework support through our Aboriginal learning centres.

 

  • Foster care and adoption – We provide short term foster care while we work with birth parents to have their children restored. If the courts rule a child cannot safely return home, we provide permanent foster care and open adoption.
